Terry Fox was a powerful Canadian athlete who lost his leg after being diagnosed with cancer. After going through treatment and entering remission, he decided it was his mission to help raise money for a cause that affected so many Canadians. He decided that he would raise the money by running across Canada to spread cancer awareness. His hope was that each Canadian would be able to donate one dollar to the cause. Halfway through his Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox received some very heartbreaking news. His cancer had returned and his marathon would have to come to an early end. Sadly, this time in his fight against cancer, the cancer won.
For the past few years, SJMP has raised money for the Terry Fox foundation by holding a run to show our support for Terry’s dream. This annual event was held on September 29th, during fourth period classes. Everyone had the opportunity to support the cause by donating any change they had. Even though it began to rain, the students all had the opportunity to walk or run around the school to support Terry Fox. This event was organized by the SJMP Athletic Ministers and everyone had a great time participating in the event, from the quick warm up, to the inspirational video about Terry Fox’s life and dreams. Students were cheered on throughout the course and everyone was able to make it the finish line. Through this run, students were able to commemorate Terry Fox and what an impact he made on Canada. All in all, the event was a success, and a big thanks goes out to the Athletic Ministry organizing such a great day!
