How to Adjust to Canada-Advice for Newcomers

In our school we have students from all around the world, and some of them are new in Canada. As some people know, it is hard to get used to a new country and harder when you don’t know anybody, or you don’t speak the same language. Here are some tips for all those people.

  1. Improve your English skills:

- Talk to someone who doesn’t speak your language.

- Try NOT to use a translator.

- Have a dictionary (just in case you don’t understand something in class).

- Use subtitles on TV or in any video you’re watching (English to your language and your language to English).

  1. Make new friends:

- After school clubs (Chinese Club, Filipino Club)

- ESL Classes

- Joining classes outside school about something you like (dance, singing, art)

  1. Exploring the city/doing fun activities outside the school:

- Volunteering

- Going to the library (that can help you with your English skills too)

- Hang around with friends on the weekends
