On September 28th, 2016, several Ontario universities and colleges paid a visit to SJMP for the annual College and University Fair, presenting information regarding programs, tuition fees and the overall admission process. The Ontario College and University Fair is an annual event for senior students at SJMP to gain new information about prospective universities/colleges and plan their future. The event also aims to assist in the overall process of applying to a post-secondary institution. Universities and colleges, such as the University of Toronto, Seneca College and York University, were in attendance. Universities located outside of Toronto, such as Carleton, University of Guelph-Humber and Trent University, were also in attendance, diversifying students’ options. Representatives from each university/college in attendance were present to answer any questions. Students gathered in the gymnasium, visiting booths and asking insightful questions regarding potential fields of study. Booklets, flyers and even pens were distributed to students who wanted more information from said universities/colleges. Information sheets were also available for any student who wanted to receive news from the institute directly. Displayed largely on each booth were fall campus dates for students who wanted to visit prospective universities or colleges. Leah Zandberg, a grade 12 student, found the fair to be very informative and helpful towards the overall post-secondary application process. “The fair was really helpful as it was a lot less busy than the one downtown, so you didn’t have to wait a long time to speak with the university/college representatives,” she stated. “Although it didn’t have as much variety as the one downtown, the calmer atmosphere at SJMP was much appreciated.” Leah, looking towards the finance and business management field, particularly found Ryerson, York, U of T, Guelph-Humber and Trent to be prospective choices. Like Leah, Ashley Huang, a grade 11 student, also found the fair to be very insightful, having the opportunity to ask questions on a one-on-one basis. “The fair was nice, I got to ask questions that I’ve always wanted to ask,” she stated. Interested in the medical field, Ashley found York University to be a possible choice for her applications the following year. Overall, the Ontario College and University Fair at SJMP was a great success for senior students, providing useful information and resources for university and college applications.
